CentralNic Registry ensures compliance with Specification 2 of the ICANN Registry Agreement (version 2024) by implementing a secure, automated, and redundant data escrow process to safeguard domain registration data. The primary objective of this process is to ensure that ICANN can maintain continuity of registry services in the event of a failure or termination of the registry operator.
DATA ESCROW COMPLIANCE WITH SPECIFICATION 2
1. ICANN-Approved Escrow Providers
The Registry System is currently integrated with the following ICANN-approved registry data escrow providers:
- DENIC Services GmbH & Co. KG
- NCC Group
- CONAC
- Escrow4all
2. Escrow Deposit Frequency
- Daily Deposits: CentralNic Registry submits full registration data escrow deposits at least once every 24 hours.
- Incremental Deposits: CentralNic Registry currently does not provide incremental deposits for any TLDs on its system. If a TLD requires this service it will be developed in compliance with the relevant RFC’s
3. Escrow Data Contents
- Deposits contain all necessary registry data, including: Domain names, registrant and contact details; Registrar information; Nameservers and delegation records; DNSSEC key data.
- Data is formatted according to ICANN’s required escrow deposit schema.
- For TLDs running a minimal data policy there will be no contacts in the escrow deposit at the registry level
4. Transmission and Security Measures
- Escrow files are encrypted with AES-256 before transmission.
- Secure transfer methods such as SFTP over TLS 1.2/1.3 ensure data integrity.
- Each deposit is digitally signed to prevent tampering.
5. Verification and Compliance Monitoring
- Escrow providers validate data completeness, integrity, and compliance with ICANN’s specifications.
- CentralNic Registry maintains logs of successful escrow transmissions and receives compliance confirmations from the provider. Including monitoring the RRI for escrow deposits.
ADDITIONAL DATA ESCROW PROCESSES
1. Escrow for Additional Registry Services. If additional registry services require specialized data retention, escrow deposits can be extended to include:
- Premium and reserved domain lists.
- Registry lock data for high-value domains.
- Thick WHOIS and RDAP metadata if required.
2. Emergency Escrow Access Procedures
- In the event of a registry failure, ICANN can retrieve escrowed data to continue registry operations.
- Emergency deposits may be triggered for critical service continuity.
