The solutions and mitigation to be used to thwart DDoS attacks are based on more than 25 years of experience of our DNS Operations team that is running DNS for the German ccTLD [.de] and for our customers. In total more than 30m Domains under Management are using this infrastructure and are taking profit of this experience, the global architecture and the policies for running such a global DNS infrastructure. We have prepared a special document to answer to this question which is an excerpt of all the different policy documents, manual and written instructions that are involved in defending against a distributed denial of service attack.

In DNS.1.13., we have already outlined our approach to risk mitigation in context with DDoS protection. This approach applies to resiliency measures in general, too. Another part for addressing resiliency is derived from the fault tolerance measures described in DNS.3.2. With these precautions in mind, consider a pipeline of zone delivery stages. 1. We run primary DNS servers in two geographically well separated data centers in two different countries. These servers may be replaced by hidden primary servers run by customers, but not in our control . 2. We run redundant zone ingestion servers specific to each customer. 3. Zone ingestion servers feed into our internal zone delivery system, which is independently scaled based on load, but always redundant. 4. The zone delivery system deploys zone data to NSLs. The DNS service is made available via Anycast routing to the NSL locations configured for the customer. 1. We select NSL locations carefully to avoid single points of failure based on a diversity of: a. geography b. datacenter operators c. transit providers and IXPs d. availability of intercontinental routes 2. We furthermore run the locations with hard- and software diversity in mind such that the likelihood of a vulnerability being exploited in any attack is minimized (see DNS.2.1). 3. When backend connectivity cannot be guaranteed, NSLs deliver zones from a local cache. This can, of course, lead to temporary divergence of serials across locations, but is preferable to losing queries altogether. 4. As per DNS.3.1. we can assign individual IP prefixes to customers, and so provide more resilience in routing solutions. 5. We furthermore run a diversity of name server software, in case attacks on or failure of any particular software or version provides a problem. Depending on the customer agreement, we may keep backups of zone data so that we can serve the zone even when primaries are unreachable.
